Asbury Partners LLC has defaulted on it’s loans and its interests will be sold Dec 15,th 2009. While we understand that economic times are difficult, we believe that this turn of evens can only be beneficial to Asbury Park.

This means that the Partners, who have been holding our city hostage for the last two years, will now be forced to sell to developers who actually plan to do something with our waterfront. We can only hope that the assets and/or properties offered for sale will be purchased not by one entity, but multiple smaller companies investing in Asbury Park by purchasing individual properties. This will eliminate the “All our Eggs in One Basket” syndrome AP has suffered from for decades.

In the coming weeks we will learn the full ramifications of these events. Perhaps one day this city’s people and government will realize that they have the power to take back our town.

The ShowRoom, Whole Foods Market Middletown, Edible Jersey and Marilyn Schlossbach Join Forces for Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion

The ShowRoom, Asbury Park’s independent cinema and multi-purpose venue, announced today a special screening of the newly released documentary “Food, Inc.” by filmmaker Robert Kenner. On Sunday, August 16, the Cookman Ave. movie theater will bring the film’s topical nature to life with an interactive panel discussion following the 5:00p.m. screening.

The ShowRoom has invited representatives from organizations that are directly related to New Jersey’s food industry to appear on the panel. Nancy Painter, publisher and editor of Edible Jersey, Susan Henderson of Whole Foods Market Middletown and Jersey Shore restaurateur Marilyn Schlossbach, will all take part in the post-film discussion. Given their industry insights, each participant will be able to express their unique point of view on the film, how it pertains to New Jersey’s food industry, the importance of buy-local initiatives and more.

“Food, Inc.” is an eye-opening documentary,” said Michael Sodano, co-owner of The ShowRoom. “We are proud our theater can bring the film to New Jersey audiences, and are even more pleased our panel will be able to address the film’s far-reaching issues on a local level.”

In addition to the interactive discussion, audience members will receive complimentary, reusable shopping bags from Whole Foods Market Middletown. The summer issue of Edible Jersey will be available to attendees, along with information on Asbury Park’s weekly Carousel Farmer’s Market. Marilyn Schlossbach will also offer a special promotion to the audience redeemable at her Asbury Park restaurant, Langosta Lounge.

“Food, Inc.” was made available in limited release in June of 2009, making The ShowRoom one of the first venues in New Jersey to screen the film. The controversial documentary endeavors to expose how large corporations and fast-food culture have created a dangerous environment within our nation’s food industry. The 94-minute film features commentary on where the food industry goes wrong and how big business has negatively impacted food in America.

“Food, Inc.” will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16. The panel discussion will commence after the film. In addition to the August-16 event, The ShowRoom will screen “Food, Inc.” on Thursday, August 13 and Friday, August 14. For more information, or to purchase tickets, please visit www.theshowroomap.com or call 732-502-0472.

On Saturday, July 18 the Parlor Gallery presents the opening reception of “Shaved Apes Will Paint.”

This show features the work of lowbrow artists, KRK Ryden and Martin Moore.

They may share a last name, but make no mistake: Keyth Ryden is not The Artist Formerly Known as Mark. As his alias suggests, he’s an enigma unto himself, creating paintings that draw from past, present, and future all at once. KRK Ryden’s art is a record of mongrel pop culture. His aesthetic is informed by comic books, punk rock, and cartoons, while his worldview is strictly DEVO. KRK’s work embraces everyday absurdity and a cartoony view of reality. His paintings are colorful and visually appealing reflections on discarded icons, and his graphics are well-realized snapshots of cartoon life. For over thirty years KRK has been creating illustrations and paintings for underground bands, publishers, and institutions.

Martin Moore is an illustrator hailing from Florida. He and KRK are long time friends and have been looking forward to doing this show together!

Gallery 2 will feature the work of local artist, Jamie Patterson and other gallery artists.

Please join us in Asbury Park for this exciting art event! It will be held from 7:00 to 11:00 pm. at The Parlor Gallery located at 717 Cookman Ave, Asbury Park, NJ 07712.

This legendary performer deserves an iconic venue, one which matches her unique and unabashed style–Suzanne meet The Stone Pony. Don’t miss this one night only event where the Pony is gay for a day.

The first openly gay comedian in the United States, Suzanne has delivered gay material to straight audiences in mainstream comedy clubs beginning in NYC since the early ’90s. After accepting a dare, she entered the world of comedy by accident and her life has never been the same since. Suzanne soon became the first lesbian comedian to garner an HBO Comedy Special, earning her a Cable Ace Award nomination. Additionally, a performance on “Late Night with David Letterman” marked the first by an openly lesbian comedian.

Fearless, bold, unapologetic, and freaking hilarious best describes Comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer. She’s made a career out of telling the truth. And, the truth is, life is funny and no one is off limits. From her mom’s Last Will and Testament to her dog’s embarrassing discovery, Suzanne shares stories that leave audiences in stitches.
Suzanne works mostly unscripted, so when she hits the stage it’s an unpredictable, original night of comedy magic.

On land or at sea, Suzanne delights audiences with over 100 performances a year at theaters, clubs, colleges, fundraisers and cruise and resort vacations. Having toured with the Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco while on various cruises, Suzanne wishes she’d been born a rockstar.

Suzanne’s current live tour, “A Bottom on Top,” aired as a comedy special and documentary on LOGO Television in fall 2007 (and is now available on DVD). In the summer of 2006, Suzanne starred nightly on the GSN’s remake of the classic game show, “I’ve Got a Secret.” HBO, Bravo and LOGO TV specials dot her resume. Her latest venture, a starring role in the online drama “We Have To Stop Now” is available atJillBennett.com.
COMEDY CDS / DVD & AWARDS

“HBO Comedy with Suzanne Westenhoefer” (1994): Nominated for a Cable Ace Award

Sound Artist William Robert returns to Asbury Park to present a three dimensional sound environment at Parlor Gallery (formerly Crybaby, 717 Cookman Ave.) on Friday, July 10th, from 7:30pm – 11:00pm. A suggested donation of $5.00 is appreciated. His “Times Square” is a fascinating piece built from field recordings made during the fall of 2001.

“Times Square” Is a swirling mass of taxis, street music, and protesters molded into a room-filling sound environment. Traffic presented as hypnosis.

In 2001, William was interested in creating soundworks that left the original audio relatively untouched. No filtering, no panning just the sounds of post 9/11 Manhattan looped upon themselves. This creates a pulsing rhythm dictated by the sounds themselves. Noises slowly work their way to the foreground, eventually receding as they are replaced by new material. There is no beginning or ending, it simply repeats and evolves for hours and hours.

A graduate of the Berklee School of Music (Boston, MA), William Robert has been making music for close to thirty years. In the early nineties he began experimenting with sound installations, much like the work you will hear on July 10th.

“Times Square” by William Robert, at Parlor Gallery (717 Cookman Ave, Asbury Park NJ) on Friday, June 10th from 7:30pm -11pm. The event features a three-dimensional sound environment by William Robert using field recordings of Manhattan in the months after 9/11. A suggested donation of $5.00 is appreciated. Appropriate for all ages.
