Crust and Crumble is becoming my new favorite place in town to get a quick, delicious, gourmet bite to eat. They now offer many vegan options which you can create so many yummy dishes with. They have vegan sausage, vegan meatballs and vegan cheese. So you can order a vegan pizza loaded with veggies and some slices of vegan sausage. Or you can get a vegan sausage or vegan meatball parm sandwich. Vegan sausage and peppers and onions. Spaghetti and vegan meatballs….the list goes on and on ! And their salads are just as good. While the Green Goddess dressing isn’t vegan, it sure is yummy for vegetarians. They do offer 2 vegan vinaigrette dressings. They also occasionally do some vegan baking, check them out and see what selections are there! They are located inside the Shoppes at the Arcade at 658 Cookman Ave. You can also enter on Lake Ave. www.crustandcrumble.com

You know those plastic caps on your water bottles, soda bottles and laundry detergent that you never know if you should leave on or not? Do they recycle them if you leave it on? A friend told you that if you leave it on they won’t recycle it. So you throw them in the garbage, right? Well not any more!Clean Ocean Action has partnered with Aveda, the skincare company to recycle them and turn them in to new caps for Aveda’s products. There was a contest that started a few months ago to see who can collect the most caps. There were schools, churches and businesses who participated and over 2 million caps were collected all together! Isn’t it amazing what can happen if a few people group together? We collected here at Organic Style and in just a few weeks, we collected 3000! We had great support from customers and other business owners in the area such as Mike’s Beach House, Twisted Tree, Shelter Home and many others. We even had one young lady who brought in about 500 that she collected at her school.

Plastic caps are the number one item found on beaches during clean ups. All too often, birds and other marine animals mistake them for food and often die from not being able to digest them. Now there’s a way to keep them off the beaches and out of the landfills. We will be collecting here at Organic Style as long as they keep taking them. You are welcome to continue bringing them in to us at the store at 621 Cookman Ave, Asbury Park, NJ.

Acceptable caps include shampoo, water, soda, milk and other beverage bottles, flip top caps on tubes and food product bottles (such as ketchup and mayonnaise), laundry detergents and some jar lids such as peanut butter. Softer, flexible lids such as margarine tub lids and yogurt lids are not acceptable. Please be sure not to include metal lids or plastic pumps or sprayers. Happy Recycling!

So you’re heard about the Great American Smokeout? Well believe it or not there’s also the “Meatout” on March 20, a day to spread awareness and ask friends and family to pledge to kick the meat habit (at least for a day). I’ll spare you all the details but I will just mention that producing meat is one of the single worst enemies for the environment. Between runoff from factory farms to chemicals and pesticides used, it is just a huge mess. So if you are trying to “kick the habit” or just want to give it a try for a day, then where oh where do you go for some great veggie food in Asbury Park? Here’s a few options :

Twisted Tree – if you’ve been here already then you know… mucho options – tofu pesto sandwich, hummus wraps, vegan chicken salad, awesome salads, vegan muffins, cupcakes, cake, cookies.

Munch – many options here that I didn’t know about and will need to try! The “Munch Noodle Bowl with Tofu”(can be made vegan upon request), Veggie burgers, Mother Nature wrap, The Garden Press(can be made without cheese).

Restaurant Plan B – this place is definitely on my “need to go to” list. They have a daily vegan entree on their menu such as marinated tofu or seared seitan so we’re not talking pasta and salad here !

Rafferty’s and BrickWall Tavern – these both have veggie burgers which are pretty good and they make great fries! Rafferty’s actually has a few other items worth mentioning – great salads, edamame, a veggie stir fry.

Mattison Park and Crust & Crumble offer vegan pizzas.

We just found out that sadly, Sister Sue’s has closed. And I was so missing their veggie lemon chicken. Why is it always the good ones close? I have to give them kudos though for offering such a varied selection of vegan options. If you were one of the lucky ones to go before they closed, then you know how good it was. Vegan mac & cheese…I miss you! And we will miss Sister Sue’s.

So get out there, give up the meat for the day and try some new dining experiences!

And stop in to Organic Style for a free list of other great area veggie restaurants.

With spring just around the corner, I can’t help getting excited about gardening and what to plant this year. I did buy a few seeds recently which I might start indoors soon as long as I can find a sunny spot where my cats can’t get to. This year I will be trying a garden in my front yard since that is where we get the most sun. It’s typically thought of as unneighborly to plant a vegetable garden in your front yard, but I say, why not ! Since I usually always buy organic produce, I felt it necessary to search out organic seeds and was able to find a very good selection at Home Depot. So far it will be carrots and string beans for this year. That might be about all I can fit anyway. As soon as the ground starts to warm up a bit, I will go to my compost pile and dig up some good earthy dirt to mix in for the garden. Composting is so simple, you just need a small area in the corner of your yard or you can buy one of those plastic composter bins to put on a deck or back porch. Here’s some basic do’s and don’ts to composting:

Do’s

Add vegetable and fruit scraps

pastas, bread products (no cheese or dairy on them)

Shredded newspaper

Shredded cardboard(cereal boxes)

Lint from your dryer and vaccuum

eggshells

lawn and house plant clippings

garden trimmings

dried grass and leaves

Don’ts

Never add meat or animal products

No fish

No dairy(milk, cheese, yogurt, etc)

No diseased plants, plants with insects

We basically set up a square area about 3 feet x 3 feet and bought plastic green fencing with 4 wooden stakes to form a square container and just dumped the scraps in. Toss it a bit every few days (it’s ok if you forget) and in a couple weeks, you will get this great, earthy, healthy dirt. It’s great for adding to your garden, adding to potting soil for potted plants and to just sprinkle around on your lawn as a fertilizer. Compost is very nutrient dense and is the most natural way to fertilize. Happy planning and planting!

About Organic and Fair Trade

Organic clothing is becoming mainstream just as organic produce was 10 years ago. Most organic clothing is made from Organic cotton which is grown without the use of any pesticides or chemicals. This is healthier for the farmer who is no longer exposed to dangerous chemicals, healthier for the environment with no chemical runoff into our streams, land and ocean and healthier for you wearing the clothing. It actually takes approximately 1/3 lb. of pesticides to produce one non-organic t-shirt! People in countries such as Uzbekistan and India where much of conventional cotton is produced are forced into horrific conditions. The government controls their lives very tightly and if the farmers do not obey, they are likely to be arrested and beaten. There is also an alarming trend of farmer suicides in India. The state is responsible for bringing the livelihoods of millions of people to such desperation they feel suicide is the only way out. And to think before World War II, everything was organic. Our modern day pesticides were developed based on research in developing bombs. Scary isn’t it?

Fair trade means the workers who made the clothing or products are paid a living wage that they can support their families with. Basically the opposite of sweat shops. Typically there are also extremely strict guidelines the manufacturers must follow including fair working hours, healthy working conditions, and medical benefits in order to become fair trade certified. Sometimes it takes a few years of monitoring by a certification agency before the company can become Fair Trade certified. In many countries women are forced into prostitution to support their families. Now by making fair trade baskets and jewelry, they can make a living wage and live a respectable life.

By supporting organic and fair trade you are helping to make our world a better place to live!
