About Organic and Fair Trade
Organic clothing is becoming mainstream just as organic produce was 10 years ago. Most organic clothing is made from Organic cotton which is grown without the use of any pesticides or chemicals. This is healthier for the farmer who is no longer exposed to dangerous chemicals, healthier for the environment with no chemical runoff into our streams, land and ocean and healthier for you wearing the clothing. It actually takes approximately 1/3 lb. of pesticides to produce one non-organic t-shirt! People in countries such as Uzbekistan and India where much of conventional cotton is produced are forced into horrific conditions. The government controls their lives very tightly and if the farmers do not obey, they are likely to be arrested and beaten. There is also an alarming trend of farmer suicides in India. The state is responsible for bringing the livelihoods of millions of people to such desperation they feel suicide is the only way out. And to think before World War II, everything was organic. Our modern day pesticides were developed based on research in developing bombs. Scary isn’t it?
Fair trade means the workers who made the clothing or products are paid a living wage that they can support their families with. Basically the opposite of sweat shops. Typically there are also extremely strict guidelines the manufacturers must follow including fair working hours, healthy working conditions, and medical benefits in order to become fair trade certified. Sometimes it takes a few years of monitoring by a certification agency before the company can become Fair Trade certified. In many countries women are forced into prostitution to support their families. Now by making fair trade baskets and jewelry, they can make a living wage and live a respectable life.
By supporting organic and fair trade you are helping to make our world a better place to live!
