Asbury Park..Mayberry in Disguise?
When I first came to Asbury Park, I admit it, I was caught. I was completely caught and completely smitten with the possibilities. I instantly felt an attraction to the dark side of Asbury park’s past and I felt enamored of its resilience and charm. This little city that could, that existed as a dark spot on the map of the Jersey Shore for decades.
There was an excitement to its cityscape, something so unique and so utterly unexpected. So, like many, I packed up my reservations, threw what caution I had to the wind and plopped myself down in the middle of this City by the Sea. What I did not know, at the time, was that this “City” was really a lovely little town, with a lovely little town community. Yes, it still has all of the big city charm and the big city problems, but it has more.
When I cross the street, people shout out hellos to me. When I stop someplace for a bite, people come to the table. And if for a moment my ego allowed me to think that this was me, I notice people standing on the street chatting. I see people within my store waving across the street to diners at Munch. I never knew I was missing t hat. But I was. I missed out on the small town community. Who knew I would find it in this growing city?
